Wow! my first home-grown red banana. The "tree" is not tall and easy to grow. I think it is the Caribbean dwarf which is about 6ft or slightly taller. The fruit is at first red and then purplish. I've never seen red banana before. The first harvest is 4 hands x 12 fingers. The next will be a few more months.

It is not very sweet as mentioned in the net but it is smooth and very fine. Taste so much better than our local banana.

<![CDATA[ Family life (2)]]>Tue, 01 May 2012 16:51:51 -0800http://www.kennykhaw.com/7/post/2012/05/-family-life-2.htmlMy granddaughter will be 12 years old by May 2, that is tomorrow. My son and daughter-in-law have done a good job bringing up their daughter. It is tough in the first few years when a child goes through many changes in health and character development. I remembered all the worried moments when my granddaughter was sick, quite frequent when she was small, and a period of throwing tantrum.

Life goes on and she is now in Jakarta, Indonesia and studying in an international school there, The photos here showed her celebrating her birthday with some of her school friends a few days earlier.

There is a gap of 12 years between my two grandchildren and also living a great distance apart making it difficult to know each other better.

<![CDATA[ Family life]]>Mon, 30 Apr 2012 23:48:41 -0800http://www.kennykhaw.com/7/post/2012/04/-family-life.htmlThe begining is always the difficult part. My daughter and her husband will have to go through a period of changes to their lives. The cycle goes on and on. When we started our family we too had to face the same situation where both parents have to work. Well in no time the baby will be walking, running, schooling, working and then - starting the next generation.

My grandson is now 2 months old and my wife has been in England for more than 3 months. Here are some photos of the little one.

<![CDATA[Mother & child]]>Sun, 04 Mar 2012 03:24:57 -0800http://www.kennykhaw.com/7/post/2012/03/mother-son.htmlI cannot imaging my daughter being a mother. I still remember when my granddaughter was about 2 years old and my daughter just returned from UK. It was so funny seeing my daughter trying to "handle/carry" her niece. This photo shows the difference between now and then.

<![CDATA[My second grandchild]]>Wed, 29 Feb 2012 19:46:20 -0800http://www.kennykhaw.com/7/post/2012/02/my-second-grandchild.htmlOh what anxiety and excitment when my daughter started to show signs of her baby wanting to come out to meet the world. She was admitted to hospital on the 28th evening but her son, a big boy, decided to be a leap year baby.

The funny part was that my wife was on skype with me until almost midnight (UK time) when she decided to go to bed and said would let me know of the birth. In Malaysia it was morning when my son-in-law called me from UK to inform me of his son's birth (there is a difference of 8 hours between UK and Malaysian time). So when my wife woke up early morning she was surprised to see the message I left on her skype. I knew of the birth long before her and so do all our relatives in Malaysia.

So now I have 2 "dragon" grandchildren. Most chinese families would like to have children born in the year of the dragon, a symbol of strength, righteousness and leadership. That is why this year countries with large chinese population are expecting an increase in their birth rate.

<![CDATA[Home alone]]>Mon, 06 Feb 2012 19:28:35 -0800http://www.kennykhaw.com/7/post/2012/02/home-alone.htmlYesterday my wife flew to London to take care of my daughter who is expected to give birth later this month. My wife was telling me earlier that in Malaysia a person can check into hospital and received medical attention as soon as the water bag burst. But in UK one cannot do so as the hospital will not admit the person until later stage of labour. Now it is winter and nobody can tell how the weather will be like later this month. So how do a person judge when to go to hospital with snow and ice covering the road making it dangerous for a last minute rush. Another point is there is no prolong stay in hospital in UK. One has to go home one day after birth.

Anyway, my wife will be in UK for almost 6 months. Looks like a long time, but then time flies nowadays. A friend in Canada commented that she would not dare to leave her spouse alone for such a long time as there are many widows looking for men. OMG.

<![CDATA[Butterflies of Malaysia]]>Thu, 26 Jan 2012 04:46:58 -0800http://www.kennykhaw.com/7/post/2012/01/butterflies-of-malaysia.htmlActually it should be butterflies in my garden. Other than birds, which I love their singing but hate their droppings, butterflies too are enjoying my garden. Well I enjoy chasing after them with my camera.

At first I just photograph them as a subject. I did not take much interest in them. Later when I have more photos that I decided to check out the type and species and found out the great variety and beauty of the butterfly world.
Anyone interested in individual photos can request from me.

<![CDATA[January 23, 2012]]>Sun, 22 Jan 2012 17:45:49 -0800http://www.kennykhaw.com/7/post/2012/01/january-23-2012.htmlToday is the Chinese New Year. We have been away from home many Chinese new years and it does feel different this time celebrating at home. Last night, on the eve, was so noisy with the neighbours letting of fire crackers and fire works non-stop. Could not sleep at all.

I remember during my childhood days we, the children, must not sleep until after midnight and after praying to receive the new year. This was for our parents longevity - that's what we were told. Or maybe to keep us awake to help in our parents' preparation to receive the new year. My parents belong to the Baba Nonya era. There were many customs and traditions to follow.

I do not follow any now and as time goes on all customs and beliefs will be forgotten eventually.

<![CDATA[Chinese New Year]]>Mon, 16 Jan 2012 04:18:03 -0800http://www.kennykhaw.com/7/post/2012/01/chinese-new-year.htmlThe Chinese new year is around the corner - January 23, 2012. This time the mood is subdue because of the very high cost of foodstuff and other necessary items required by the Chinese for this important celebration. Many people will have to forego the traditional "must have" this time. We are not stocking up on anything although this year we are staying home to celebrate the Chinese new year.

My wife will be leaving for London on February 6, 2012. My daughter, who is working in London, is expecting to give birth later in February. In view of limited time we decided not to go to Jakarta now but later this year.

Gong Xi Fa Chai.

<![CDATA[Happy New Year]]>Tue, 27 Dec 2011 19:26:04 -0800http://www.kennykhaw.com/7/post/2011/12/happy-new-year.html
New year new resolution. There is nothing much I can think of. Life just goes on as usual, growing older every year while my grandchildren grow up. As I always believe health is wealth, so keep staying healthy.
